What is a Keke Napep? Parts, Models, and Where to Source Spares

Keke Napep is Nigeria's ubiquitous 3-wheeled taxi. But 'Keke' covers multiple models with different engines, dimensions, and part requirements. This guide explains what's actually under the hood β€” and what parts wear out fastest.

What Is a Keke Napep?

"Keke Napep" is the Nigerian street name for 3-wheeled motorised passenger tricycles β€” derived from "keke" (wheel/cycle in Yoruba) and "NAPEP" (National Poverty Eradication Programme), the federal programme under which 3-wheelers were introduced to Nigerian cities in the early 2000s as low-cost commercial transport.

The Keke Napep is now one of the most important urban and peri-urban transport modes in Nigeria, with hundreds of thousands of units operating across Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Onitsha, and most secondary cities. Operators are typically owner-drivers or members of local transport unions, running routes between bus stops, markets, and residential areas.

Mechanically, a Keke Napep is a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive 3-wheeler: one front wheel steered by handlebars, two rear wheels driven through a propeller shaft, gearbox, and differential. This shaft-drive configuration is fundamentally different from a motorcycle, and understanding it is essential for mechanics and parts importers.

The Main Models in Nigeria

Multiple manufacturers produce Keke Napep variants for the Nigerian market. The dominant models are:

Bajaj RE β€” Manufactured by Bajaj Auto India, the Bajaj RE is the most widely distributed Keke in Nigeria. It has gone through several engine generations β€” the earliest models had 2-stroke engines; current imports are 4-stroke. The RE Compact (lower payload) and RE 4-stroke/DTS-i (higher payload) variants are both common. Bajaj RE parts from India are well-supplied and widely understood in the Nigerian aftermarket.

TVS King β€” Manufactured by TVS Motor Company India. Popular across southern and northern Nigeria and available in Deluxe and Duramax variants. TVS King parts are available through TVS's authorised distribution network in Nigeria as well as through independent importers sourcing from India.

Piaggio Ape β€” The original 3-wheeler design, made by Italian manufacturer Piaggio. Less common in Nigeria than Bajaj and TVS but found in some markets. Parts are harder to source locally.

Chinese-branded units β€” Various Chinese manufacturers have exported Keke-style 3-wheelers to Nigeria under brand names that are often not widely recognised. Parts supply for these is generally unreliable, which drives operators toward Indian-brand units for commercial use.

How the Drivetrain Works

Understanding the Keke Napep drivetrain helps importers know what parts wear out and why:

Engine β€” 4-stroke, single-cylinder, air-cooled petrol engine (200–220cc range on most current Bajaj RE variants; TVS King uses a similar configuration). High-revving commercial use in stop-start city traffic puts intense load on engine wear parts β€” pistons, rings, and valve train components need replacement more frequently than on motorcycles doing the same mileage.

Gearbox β€” Most Keke Napep units use a conventional manual gearbox (4–5 speeds) operated by a twist-grip on the handlebar. The gearbox is connected to the engine via a clutch. Gear selector forks and synchromesh components wear from the constant shifting in city traffic.

Propeller shaft β€” A central shaft running from the gearbox output to the rear differential, with universal joints at each end to accommodate suspension movement. This is a high-stress component β€” it transmits 100% of engine torque while rotating at engine speed and absorbing road vibration.

Rear differential β€” Splits drive between the two rear wheels and allows them to rotate at different speeds in corners. Differential pinion and crown wheel wear is a common issue on high-mileage units.

Brakes β€” Most units use drum brakes front and rear. Drum shoes, brake cables, and wheel cylinders (on hydraulic systems) are regular replacement items.

Fastest-Moving Parts for Spare Parts Importers

For importers building a Keke Napep parts stock, prioritise by replacement frequency:

High frequency (replace every 20,000–50,000 km or at breakdown): - Piston and rings set - Engine gasket sets - Timing chain and tensioner - Clutch plate sets - Brake shoes (front and rear) - Propeller shaft universal joints - Air filter and oil filter

Moderate frequency (replace at major service intervals or failure): - Valve train components (valves, springs, rocker arms) - Gearbox seal sets and gear selectors - Propeller shaft assembly (when UJs are beyond repair) - Starter motor and CDI unit - Voltage regulator/rectifier - Shock absorbers

Low frequency but high value (stocked by serious distributors): - Complete engine rebuild kits - Differential assembly parts - Cylinder head assemblies - Gearbox assemblies

Sourcing Keke Napep Parts from India

India is the primary source of aftermarket Keke Napep parts globally, for a simple reason: Bajaj RE and TVS King are manufactured in India, and the Indian aftermarket parts industry exists at scale to serve the domestic Indian market β€” the African export market is an extension of that.

Ludhiana in Punjab is the centre of India's aftermarket spare parts manufacturing for 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers. CrestMAX operates from Ludhiana, sourcing from manufacturers supplying both the Indian domestic market and African export orders.

When ordering Keke Napep parts, specify: model name (Bajaj RE, TVS King, etc.), variant if known (RE Compact, RE 4-stroke, TVS King Duramax, etc.), engine code if available (stamped on the engine block), and the specific part name. The more precise you are, the lower the chance of receiving the wrong fitment.

Contact CrestMAX for wholesale pricing on any Keke Napep part line. We supply to Nigerian, Ghanaian, and Kenyan importers on FOB Ludhiana and CIF Apapa/Tema/Mombasa terms.
